Through the Legion Branch Service Officers operating across the country working as “Referral Agents,” the Legion Provincial Service Officers come into contact with potential applicants. The Branch Service Officers are the people who often first come into contact with Veterans, spouses and dependents. They are the eyes and ears of the Service Bureau Network at the grass roots.
The Legion Provincial Service Officers serve CF members, Veterans, RCMP Members and dependents while representing your interests in any dealings with Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) and the Veterans Review and Appeal Board (VRAB) in claiming disability benefits under the Pension Act or the New Veterans Charter.
The Legion Professional Service Officers provide counseling, assistance, and representational services free of charge, whether or not you are a Legion member. Our representation role is mandated through legislation.
All claims initiated by the Legion start with the completion of the Legion Claim Form. Careful completion of this form is of great assistance to the Legion Provincial Service Officer who will represent the Veteran to initiate a disability claim. The RCL Claim Form should be completed as fully as possible, and all authorities must be signed. These authorities give The Legion the right to act as the applicant’s representative, to review Service Health records and other documentation.
Any Veteran or Veteran’s dependent in need of assistance is eligible to apply for financial aid from the Poppy Trust Fund, including:
Any person who is serving or who has honourably served in the Canadian Armed Forces or the RCMP, as well as their dependents
Merchant Navy personnel who have been awarded campaign stars or decorations, as well as their dependents
Ex-service personnel of Commonwealth countries and their dependents who reside in Canada
Ex-service personnel of allied countries and their dependents who reside in Canada
Trained Legion Command Service Officers can assist with the following:
Finding suitable accommodation: Legion Provincial Commands work closely with Veterans Affairs Canada, shelters and community organizations to get Veterans off the street and into temporary and/or long term accommodations.
Financial assistance: Through the Poppy Fund, housing support is provided through financial assistance for items such as first and last month’s rent, rental arrears and furnishings.
“Leave the Streets Behind” is the Legion’s national homeless Veterans program that started out of Ontario Command. The program’s mission is to reach out to homeless Veterans and those at-risk of homelessness and provide them with immediate financial assistance and support. It also connects them with the social and community services to establish a long term solution to meet their needs.
